Research Assistant – Feral Pig Disease Ecology and Control Modelling (QFPI)

We are seeking a Research Assistant to join the Disease Ecology Lab for a project funded by the Queensland Feral Pest Initiative (QFPI). The project focuses on developing a Bayesian network decision-support tool for feral pig control across Queensland ecoregions, integrating expert elicitation and spatial analysis.

The position is 3–4 days per week (fixed-term position). The appointment is for six months with potential for extension. Remote work (need to be in Australia) is available for the right candidate. We are looking for someone to hopefully start in July.

What the role involves:

Modelling and analysis

  • Supporting development of a Bayesian network model in R, including spatial and temporal data handling
  • Documenting and communicating modelling workflows clearly for both technical and non-technical audiences

Expert elicitation and stakeholder engagement

  • Supporting workshop documentation, logistics, and follow-up outputs

What we are looking for

  • Strong R programming skills, with experience in Bayesian network or spatial modelling
  • Background in ecology or biosecurity, or a closely related field
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks with limited supervision
  • Clear written communication skills
  • Interest in invasive species management or wildlife-livestock interface research

This position suits someone who has recently completed or is finishing a PhD, or holds a relevant master’s degree with research experience.
